The Cultural Committee of the Majlis (Iranian Parliament) has passed an amendment bill which, if ratified, will enable married women to participate in sporting competitions, religious pilgrimages, seminars and conferences held outside Iran without having to obtain their husband’s consent.
The bill was previously reviewed by the Foreign Policy and Security Committee of the Majlis. It concerns Clause 3 of Article 18 of Iran’s travel law, which allows married women to travel abroad without their husband’s permission.
Fatemeh Zolqadr, a ranking member of the Cultural Committee of the Majlis, said the bill was currently being reviewed by a special committee which includes members of the Cultural, Security and Research committees of the Majlis and representatives from the Foreign and Intelligence ministries as well as the Passport Office.
